Alternative Middle School

The Alternative Middle School Program (AMS) provides services to students in grades 5-8 who may present with behavioral and social challenges, emotional impairment and/or specific learning disabilities. The program provides a highly structured, consistent, and therapeutic environment.

Teaching is individualized with a focus on promoting academic, social, and emotional success. Predictable routines, therapeutic supports, and consistent ongoing direct teaching of social and communication skills assist in motivating students and developing their self-esteem. Strategies are utilized that assist students to learn self-control and to develop appropriate behaviors and coping skills within the school environment. The AMS academic curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts Common Core Standards and is modified to meet the learning styles and needs of each student. RELATED SERVICES: Students in this program receive counseling, speech and language, and other related services as recommended by their IEP teams.
